Behind the Scenes

Inside the workshop

Digital artworks are created on an IPad Pro and take hours of painstaking work. Visually the end results are stunning, but the behind the scenes is less visually interesting.

However, the creation of the mosaic tables is another thing altogether.

Each table is lovingly handcrafted with high attention to detail and excellent craftsmanship.

Here we share some behind the scenes images from the workshop and share the bespoke nature of the process to create the tables.

Continued…

Plyboard is used as the body of the table. Plywood is the best substrate as the grain direction in the layers is set at angles to one another resulting in much better stability.

The plyboard is cut to size and shape, sanded and the surface is prepared.

The design for each table is originally drafted on a computer.  The design is then hand-drawn onto the table and modified if required. The tile combinations are selected and any additional tiles needed are ordered.

A strip of brass banding is cut to size and small brass tabs are hand made, drilled and then brazed to the band.

The brass band is then cleaned, polished and glued around the edge of the table. Screws are put through the tabs underneath securely attaching the band to the tabletop.

At this stage, the legs are ordered to suit. The hairpin legs are sourced from a local maker and other legs are found wherever the right design is available.

Then it is on to the tiling.
1 cm x 1 cm glass tiles are used. Tiles are hand-cut and shaped or used complete depending on the section of the design. Tiles are affixed to the plyboard using thinset cement before grouting the completed mosaic tabletop.

At this stage, the legs are added.
The top is sealed, the brass is polished up and the table is ready,

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does each table take to make?

The process from design, to completion involves multiple time intensive steps (especially working with 1cm square glass tiles). The time for each table varies but is considerable. We only make a small number each year. From design phase to completed table may be as long as 3 months.

What are the prices for your tables?

Prices vary based on size and design.  Completed available tables have the prices listed in the Shop Mosaic page. Each table is a one-off art piece and the pricing reflects that.
